Maruyama Senmaida

“Senmaida” means one thousand rice paddies, many layers of terraced rice paddies overlapping each other on the steep hillsides. Maruyama Senmaida is one of the largest Senmanida in Japan, located in Kumano-city southern part of Mie-pre.

Japan is a mountainous country with over 70% of the land covered by mountains, so the terraced rice paddles were seen in various regions in the old days in Japan. However, in recent years, most of them have disappered.

The Kumano-kodo(old trails) Unesco World Heritage site “Scared site and Pligrimage route in the Kii Mountain range” is passing nearby.
