Escape from boiling hot Japanese summer.

Japan is an island country surrounded by the sea. So most of foreign people think no high mountains here in Japan except Mt.Fuji. Today I want to introduce “Shirouma-dake” 2932m located in northern Japan Alps. Shiro means “white”, uma means “horse”, dake means mountain in Japanese, so Shirouma-dake is “White hourse mountain”. It is lovely name isn’t it ?

Shirouma-dake is less than 3hours by car from Nagoya and know for daissekei (great snowy valley). This is one of the largest snowy valley in Japan. The length of the daisekkei is 3.5km and takes 2.5hrs of climbing on snow. At this time of the year, temperature goes more than 35degrees everyday in Tokyo or Osaka, whereas there is still a massive amount of snow here at Shiroume-dake.

Cranpons are essential to climb and down for great snowy valley, 4 nails is ok but, 6 nails is better for decending.

There are some deadly accidents by falling rocks on the daisekkei every year. Rocks approach you without making sounds on the snow, so do not look down, always look ahead while climbing, not to take break time on the snow untill you past the daissekei.
