Koga – home town for Ninja

Koga-city in Shiga-pre is famous as homeland of Ninja. There are two Ninja homelands in Japan, Iga and Koga, are neighboring, only 30km distance. The Koga Ninja house is in its original location since it was built in 1703. On the other hand Iga Ninja House was moved to current location.
Koga-ryu Ninja Yashiki (House). This is built in 1703, is the former residence of Mochizuki family. Outside of the house is just normal one-storey Japanese architectual mansion, but in fact has three floors and various traps and tricks are inside of the house, is used to protect from enemy’s attack.
The Ninja comes down a ladder. Various Ninja weapons are displayed. Above is Syuriken.

Shigaraki-kogen railway, this is a private short railway operating between Kibukawa(connecting with JR Kusatsu line) and Shigaraki station. It takes less than half hour.
The train runs on single track railroad. Easily accesible from Kyoto.
What do you think these animals are … ? Bear… or fat dog … ? No this is a Tanuki (Raccon dog). We call this “Shigaraki-tanuki”. A lot of Shigaraki-takukis are greet you on the platform of Shigaraki station.
What a big Tanuki ! Three times bigger than me.
Shigaraki-tamuki is usually placed at the entrance of japanese style restaurant(orginaly people use) such as Soba restaurants or Izakaya-restaurnt. People believe Shigaraki-tanuki bring good luck.
